Welcome to the Mary A Huntt Order of the Confederate Rose website. We proudly
support the SCV Palmetto Camp located in Columbia, South Carolina.
Our OCR Chapter 13 took the name of Mary Ann Huntt. Mary was born in the
early 1800s in Orangeburg District of South Carolina. Her maiden name was Wells.
Prior to 1860 she married William R. Huntt.
In 1863 William was elected Secretary of State for South Carolina. With this position William was charged with the care and protection of valuable state documents.
In 1865 Mary sewed the original Ordnance of Secession into the fabric of her dress and
safeguarded the State Seal from Sherman's troops when they took over the hotel Mary
was staying in. Her action saved these invaluable items for the people of South Carolina.
